In a tragic incident at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, a 23-year-old nurse was among four people killed in a mass shooting. Police reported that the nurse, Callie Weems, was shot dead while treating another victim during the attack on Friday.

"Instead of fleeing the store, she stopped to render aid in one of the most selfless acts I've ever seen," stated Colonel Mike Hagar, director of the Arkansas State Police. Weems, coming from a family with three generations of nurses, was known for her dedication to helping others.

The shooter, identified as 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey, opened fire with a shotgun shortly before midday at the Mad Butcher grocery in Fordyce, a small town about 70 miles south of Little Rock. The attack resulted in four fatalities and nine injuries. Posey, who was wounded in a shootout with police, will face four counts of capital murder, authorities confirmed.

Weems, affectionately nicknamed "Woodrow" after the character from "Lonesome Dove," loved riding horses. Her father, Tommy Weems, reflected on her character, saying, "She died doing what she always does: Helping."

Police are still investigating the motive behind what Colonel Hagar described as a "completely random, senseless act." The shooter began by firing indiscriminately in the parking lot before moving inside the store, using a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol, and primarily firing buckshot.

"During the incident, we observed the very best and the very worst of humanity," Hagar noted, commending the bravery of six police officers who intervened to protect civilians. Two officers were among the wounded.

The other victims who lost their lives were identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81. The injured victims, whose ages range from 20 to 65, are currently receiving treatment.

This heartbreaking event has left the tight-knit community of Fordyce in mourning, as they remember the lives lost and the heroism displayed during the tragedy.
