In a show of solidarity and support, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the Madina market in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality of the Greater Accra Region yesterday morning (April 19, 2024). The purpose of his visit was to extend condolences and assistance to traders who fell victim to a recent fire incident.

Dr. Bawumia, upon learning of the devastating fire that occurred on April 10, 2024, wasted no time in taking action. He promptly directed an assessment of the situation and entrusted a contractor to provide estimates for the necessary reconstruction efforts.

During his engagement with the affected traders, Dr. Bawumia pledged a substantial amount of GH¢200,000 to support those whose shops were ravaged by the fire. Additionally, he announced that the Women’s Empowerment Fund of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) would provide assistance to the over 110 fire victims who suffered losses in the blaze.

The Vice-President reassured the traders that plans for the market's reconstruction were underway, with designs being prepared to initiate construction promptly. He disclosed that the new market layout would accommodate 120 stores and 78 small shops on the ground.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the affected traders in their recovery process. He highlighted the role of Kosi Yankey, CEO of the GEA, in ensuring that the victims receive the necessary financial assistance through the women's empowerment fund.

The engagement witnessed the presence of market leaders, fire officers, police personnel, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other security operatives.

As the community looks toward rebuilding and recovery, Vice-President Bawumia's visit and announcement of support offer a beacon of hope for the affected traders of the Madina market.
