LGBTQ: I cannot support that which my religion, as well as Christianity, forbids - Dr. Bawumia

In a resolute declaration during Eid prayers in Kumasi, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia voiced staunch opposition to homosexuality in Ghana, aligning his stance with both cultural traditions and religious beliefs prevalent in the nation.

Addressing thousands of Muslims, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his adherence to Islamic teachings, highlighting the Quran's disapproval of LGBTQ practices, including same-sex marriages. He firmly asserted that his faith leaves no room for ambiguity on the matter.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia underscored Ghana's cultural and societal norms, which he described as incompatible with the acceptance of homosexuality. He referenced the prevailing sentiments within both Muslim and Christian communities, emphasizing their collective opposition to such practices.

His remarks come amid ongoing legislative efforts, notably the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021 by Parliament. The bill proposes stringent penalties, including imprisonment, for individuals engaged in or advocating homosexual activities.

However, despite parliamentary approval, the bill awaits presidential endorsement, pending a legal challenge at the Supreme Court. President Akufo-Addo's decision on the bill remains pending amidst judicial scrutiny.

Dr. Bawumia's unequivocal stance reflects a broader societal discourse on LGBTQ rights in Ghana, where cultural, religious, and legal considerations intersect. As the nation navigates these complex issues, the Vice President's pronouncement further underscores the deep-seated divisions and ongoing debates surrounding homosexuality in the country.
