Second-Year Student Injured in Alleged Assault by NDC Supporters in Kumasi

In a troubling incident at the Christian Service University College (CSUC), a second-year communications student sustained a head injury after being allegedly assaulted by supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The altercation occurred during a public lecture marking the university’s 50th anniversary, featuring a speech by former President and 2024 NDC flagbearer, John Mahama.

The victim, Nana Boakye, an organizer of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) student wing, TESCON, reportedly reacted to Mahama’s critique of NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign. Mahama's remark, describing Bawumia's campaign as a “concert party,” was met with mixed reactions. While many applauded, Boakye’s jeers led to a violent response from NDC supporters.

Boakye recounted the events: “I responded and said, ‘Mahama wo boa' na wo b3 wi’ [Meaning Mahama you’re lying, you will lose]. Later on, a macho man warned me to be careful. When I questioned him, he slapped me in front of the former President. As we exited the auditorium, I was struck again, lost vision, and was beaten on my head and stomach.”

With his head bandaged and arm in a splint, Boakye described how efforts to rescue him were thwarted by irate party members who broke into the office where he was being sheltered. The NPP’s Ashanti Region spokesperson, Paul Yandoh, expressed deep disappointment over the incident.

As of now, Boakye has not yet filed an official complaint with the police. The incident has sparked significant outrage and highlights the ongoing tensions between Ghana's major political parties.
