NDC Aims for $3 Billion Investment in Digital Jobs Under 'One Million Coders Programme

Former President John Mahama has announced the National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s ambitious plan to invest $3 billion in the creation of additional digital jobs for the youth through its 'One Million Coders Programme'. The initiative, aimed at bolstering the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, was revealed during a public lecture at the Christian Service University in Kumasi, marking the university's 50th anniversary.

During his address, Mahama emphasized the NDC’s dedication to sound economic management and governance reforms, aiming to stabilize the Ghanaian economy. He underscored the need to halt the cedi’s depreciation and restore its value against other currencies. "Our economic policy will be geared towards sustainable growth with an equitable distribution of the proceeds of growth amongst our citizens," he assured.

Mahama criticized the current economic reliance on raw material exports with minimal value addition, deeming it unsustainable. He highlighted the necessity for significant economic transformation to ensure government effectiveness in providing for its people.

The former president also pledged to revitalize Ghana’s traditional export sectors, particularly cocoa farming, by offering incentives to farmers to increase production and capitalize on favorable global market prices. He lamented the lack of progress in the oil and gas sector over the past eight years, calling for immediate action to develop new wells and avoid future stranded assets as the world transitions to green energy.

In his vision for the next NDC government, Mahama outlined plans to enhance control over Ghana’s natural resources, push for processing industries, and attract investments in farming, industry, and agribusiness. This approach, he believes, will boost export potentials and stabilize the country's currency.
