Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs' proposed Bill to establish a chieftaincy fund, supporting chiefs in community governance and conflict resolution.
In an effort to bolster the pivotal role of traditional leaders in community governance, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is poised to present a Bill in Parliament next month. This legislation aims to establish a chieftaincy fund dedicated to supporting chiefs in fulfilling their mandates within their respective communities.
The proposed fund is envisioned to provide financial assistance for various initiatives, including the training of chiefs in contemporary conflict resolution methodologies and the administration of justice. This comprehensive approach will encompass equipping chiefs with essential skills such as navigating legal procedures, including filing cases in court, and honing their mediation abilities for resolving disputes effectively within their traditional domains.
Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing chieftaincy and acknowledged the indispensable role chiefs play in community management. Speaking at a gathering with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) in Ho, the Minister stressed the significance of empowering chiefs through continuous education to ensure their positive impact on communities.
Furthermore, the Minister underscored the imperative of unity among chiefs and urged collaboration with the government to uphold peace, particularly in the lead-up to the general election. Addressing concerns specific to the Volta Region, Minister Asamoah Boateng reiterated the government's stance against any form of secessionist threats, commending the efforts of chiefs in addressing such challenges.
He urged chiefs to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing the resurgence of extremist activities within their jurisdictions, emphasizing the critical role traditional authorities play in maintaining national stability.
Minister Asamoah Boateng highlighted that the nation's progress hinges on the active participation of traditional leaders. He cited examples such as the preservation of traditional courts and the adaptation of customs to contemporary needs, emphasizing the indispensable contributions of chiefs in shaping societal norms and governance structures.
The proposed chieftaincy fund, coupled with ongoing efforts to enhance the capacity of chiefs, reflects the government's commitment to fostering effective community governance and preserving traditional institutions as vital components of national development.
