Kennedy Agyapong Declines Vice Presidency Candidacy, Focusing on Business and Party Support
Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, asserts his disinterest in running as Vice President in the upcoming elections, citing his outspoken nature and commitment to supporting Ghana's economic development through his businesses and party contributions.
The Member of Parliament (MP) representing Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, unequivocally stated his disinterest in assuming the role of running mate to any presidential candidate in the upcoming general elections.
In an interview on Accra-based Pan African Television, Agyapong clarified that his outspoken nature, which he is well-known for, could potentially undermine the authority of the President, a superior he respects.
"To be frank, I cannot serve as Vice President because I firmly believe in speaking my mind. I refuse to merely be a subordinate. Unfortunately, in Ghana, outspokenness often leads to negative labeling," Mr. Agyapong asserted.
During the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential primary in 2023, Agyapong contested alongside four others. Despite securing second place, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the party's flagbearer for the forthcoming elections.
Dr. Bawumia, who recently unveiled a list of party stalwarts aiding his campaign, has yet to disclose his choice for running mate.
In emphasizing his lack of interest in the vice presidency, Agyapong highlighted his belief that one doesn't necessarily need a prominent political position to positively impact Ghanaians' lives.
"I refuse to pursue the Vice Presidency at all costs. My businesses have provided employment opportunities and sustenance for many Ghanaians, which is immensely fulfilling," he affirmed.
Agyapong expressed his preference for contributing to the success of the New Patriotic Party and Ghana's economic progress from a less visible role.
"I have no desire for the vice presidency. I prefer to support from behind the scenes and offer my contributions where necessary," reiterated Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central.
