John Dramani Mahama Vows Realistic Governance Approach Amid Economic Challenges
John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of Ghana's opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), pledges a pragmatic governance strategy in light of economic difficulties. He refrains from making unrealistic promises and vows to address the housing needs of pre-tertiary teachers in rural areas.
The flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that he will not make promises during his campaign similar to those made by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) when they sought power. Mahama emphasized that Ghana's economy is in a precarious state, making it challenging to fulfill unrealistic pledges.
During his "Building Ghana" tour in Tamale, Mahama addressed some pre-tertiary teachers, expressing his reluctance to promise salary increases due to the country's economic difficulties. He criticized past politicians for making grandiose promises such as building factories in every district, constructing dams in every village, and allocating $1 million to each constituency annually. He distanced himself from such dishonesty, stating, "I'm not that kind of person."
Acknowledging the hardships faced by teachers, particularly those in rural areas, Mahama highlighted the issue of inadequate accommodation. He pledged that his government would prioritize providing suitable housing for teachers posted to rural communities to mitigate the problem. Mahama noted that many teachers decline postings to rural areas due to the lack of accommodation, forcing them to commute from larger towns, which consumes a significant portion of their salaries.
Furthermore, Mahama emphasized the importance of transparency regarding the country's economic realities. He asserted that under his leadership, all stakeholders would be informed about the actual state of the economy to discourage unrealistic demands.
