A 29-year-old illegal miner, Ebenezer Asante, who recently escaped from the Tarkwa Local Prison, has been fined GH¢1,200 by the Tarkwa Circuit Court. The court, presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, imposed the fine as a deterrent to others and also ordered Asante to sign a bond to be of good behavior for six months. Should he default on this bond, he will face an additional two years in prison.
Asante, a resident of New Atuabo in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, pleaded guilty to charges of escaping from lawful custody and causing damage. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve a one-year prison sentence.
The escape occurred on May 17, 2024, when Asante took advantage of the limited number of officers on duty during a weekly devotion service at the prison canteen. He managed to climb onto a shed in the prison yard, ran across the roof, damaging the iron sheets in the process, and scaled the wall to escape into the backyard of the prison.
The prison staff quickly raised the alarm, and other officers pursued Asante, recapturing him just a few meters from the prison. He was then handed over to the police.
Asante had originally been remanded to Tarkwa Local Prison on May 10, 2024, after being charged with theft by the Tarkwa District Court. His attempted escape has now resulted in additional legal consequences, highlighting the serious repercussions of escaping from lawful custody.
