Government Faces Backlash as Designated Ministers Assume Roles Amid Parliamentary Delay

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched scathing criticism against the government for greenlighting the commencement of official duties by 24 designated ministers, despite pending parliamentary approval.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, indefinitely adjourned the House following a standoff with the presidency over the contentious anti-gay bill, effectively halting the fate of the nominees in limbo.

Despite the parliamentary deadlock, designated ministers and their deputies have wasted no time in getting to work. Notably, Gender Minister Designate Darkoa Newman addressed the media on Thursday, April 18, regarding the alleged child marriage incident in Nungua Gborbu Wulomo.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, condemned this move as a blatant violation of the rule of law.

Gbande articulated, "It is just a reflection of what the government is—a government that believes in breaking the law as long as it serves political expediency. This matter is already in court, but the president, true to form, seems poised to disregard due process, relying on appointees with close ties to the judiciary. This flagrant disregard for public concern and outcry is alarming."

He further questioned the motivation behind assigning ministerial roles to individuals who are not yet deemed fit for vetting by the parliamentary committee, raising concerns about potential incompetence or past involvement in scandals.

The government's decision to forge ahead with ministerial duties in the absence of parliamentary approval has ignited a heated debate over adherence to legal processes and accountability within the political landscape.
