Ghanaian Artist Joseph Awuah-Darko Alleges Sexual Assault by Renowned Painter Kehinde Wiley
Prominent Ghanaian artist Joseph Awuah-Darko has accused renowned painter Kehinde Wiley of sexual assault, detailing two incidents from June 2021. Wiley has denied the allegations, calling them false and asserting that they had a consensual relationship.
In his post, Awuah-Darko shared his traumatic experience, revealing that the first assault occurred while he was guiding Wiley and another guest to the bathroom. Wiley allegedly groped Awuah-Darko's buttocks and made an inappropriate comment. "I was sexually assaulted by @kehindewiley. It almost destroyed me," Awuah-Darko wrote. "I hope my words and openness about my painful experience empower others to come forward."
The artist expressed his shock and concern, highlighting the unsolicited nature of the act and its occurrence at his workplace in Ghana. Awuah-Darko further alleged a second, more severe assault by Wiley, without detailing the specific circumstances. He claimed that Wiley's behavior is part of a "pattern of predatory behavior" well-known within the art community.
Wiley has since responded to the allegations in his own Instagram post, denying any wrongdoing and asserting that the relationship was consensual. "Someone I had a brief, consensual relationship with almost three years ago is now making a false accusation about our time together," Wiley wrote. "These claims are not true and are an affront to all victims of sexual abuse."
