FIFA Dismisses Reports of Blue Card Introduction in Elite Football Competitions

FIFA refute reports regarding the introduction of blue cards in major football competitions contradicts claims of an imminent trial set to be announced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The proposed blue cards were rumored to potentially feature in tournaments like the FA Cup and League Cup, pending approval by the Football Association (FA). However, FIFA clarified that reports suggesting blue cards would be implemented in elite-level competitions are incorrect and premature. FIFA stated that any trials, if conducted, should be limited to lower levels of football. The proposed trial would allow referees to issue blue cards for dissent and fouls aimed at halting promising attacks, resulting in a player's temporary expulsion from the field for 10 minutes. While blue cards have been introduced in grassroots football in some regions, their potential inclusion in professional football represents a broader incorporation of the 'sin-bin' regulation. FIFA is expected to discuss the initiation of a blue card trial at the upcoming IFAB AGM in March. However, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has expressed reservations, suggesting that such measures may detract from the essence of football.
