The Chinese national prison inmate who escaped, prompting prison officers to comb the country in search of him, did not flee from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital premises, clarified the hospital's management.

Reacting to the development in a press statement, the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, through Mustapha Salifu, Head of Public Relations, stated that the inmate departed the hospital under the supervision of two prison guards who escorted him there.

The hospital confirmed that the inmate visited on February 7, 2024, and received dental treatment. However, he left the hospital under the custody of the two guards who accompanied him.

"On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at approximately 8:00 am, a Chinese inmate from Nsawam Prison named Wang Xiao, aged 39, visited the Dental Clinic of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, accompanied by two Prison Guards.

"Upon arrival, it was noted that the prisoner was not wearing handcuffs and was not dressed in the usual inmate attire.

"He underwent registration procedures and paid a fee of GH¢167 as a non-Ghanaian.

"He then proceeded to the consulting room for examination, followed by an X-ray.

"Wang Xiao, still unhand-cuffed, accompanied by the Prison Guards, underwent the X-ray procedure.

"After the X-ray, he was briefed on the planned treatment, estimated to cost GH¢606.

"However, lacking sufficient funds for immediate treatment, he was rescheduled for the procedure on February 9, 2024.

"The prisoner subsequently left the clinic and the hospital premises in the custody of the two prison guards," the management added.

Wang Xiao, the prison inmate, was serving a one-year sentence at Nsawam Prison for theft.

DSP Irene Pokuah Wiredu, Head of Media Relations at the Ghana Prisons Service, confirmed the escape to Graphic Online on Monday, February 12, 2024, and stated that the service had issued a wanted notice soliciting public assistance in re-arresting the inmate.

Top Knowledge Media understands that the inmate was arrested in Tema, underwent a trial for theft, and was sentenced to one year in prison, which he was serving at Nsawam Prison.
