Bayern Munich Appoint Vincent Kompany as Head Coach
Bayern Munich have named Vincent Kompany as their new head coach on a three-year contract, succeeding Thomas Tuchel after agreeing a compensation fee with Burnley.
Bayern Munich have officially appointed Vincent Kompany as their new head coach, signing him on a three-year deal. The 38-year-old Belgian succeeds Thomas Tuchel and departs Burnley for the Bundesliga giants after both clubs agreed on a compensation fee, reportedly around £10.2 million.
Kompany, who had a successful stint at Burnley, led the Clarets to the Championship title in the 2022-23 season. However, Burnley was relegated from the Premier League this season, finishing in 19th place. Despite this setback, Kompany remains optimistic about his new role.
"It's a great honour to be able to work for this club - FC Bayern is an institution in international football," said Kompany, the former Manchester City defender.
Kompany retired from playing in 2020 and joined Burnley from Anderlecht in 2022, initially signing a five-year contract extension last year. However, after Burnley's home defeat by Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season, he refused to comment on his future.
Burnley expressed initial confidence in retaining Kompany but acknowledged the allure of Bayern Munich made it challenging. "We understand the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respect Vincent’s ambition to explore new opportunities," the club stated.
There has been no confirmation regarding whether Kompany's backroom team, including assistant manager Craig Bellamy, will accompany him to Germany.
Thomas Tuchel's departure this month followed Bayern's third-place finish in the Bundesliga, their worst since the 2010-11 season. Bayern faced difficulties in finding a replacement, with Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick declining the role. Efforts to retain Tuchel also proved unsuccessful.
"Vincent Kompany is a type of coach who fits in very well with FC Bayern's playing philosophy and identity," said Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund. "He is a young, very ambitious coach who brings a lot of international experience, has his finger on the pulse of the players and knows exactly what should happen on the pitch."
Kompany's tenure at Anderlecht and Burnley has bolstered his reputation, although Burnley's relegation has somewhat marred his record. A four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City, Kompany transitioned to coaching at Anderlecht in 2020 before moving to Burnley.
BBC Sport reports that former Chelsea and Everton coach Frank Lampard is interested in succeeding Kompany at Burnley. Meanwhile, Steve Cooper, former Nottingham Forest manager, has ruled himself out of contention, aiming for a Premier League position.
