Bawumia Accuses ECG Staff of Deliberate Sabotage in Digitalization Efforts
VP Bawumia details how ECG staff sabotaged digitalization efforts

In a startling revelation, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has accused certain individuals within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of intentionally obstructing the government's ambitious digitalization agenda aimed at modernizing revenue collection processes.

Addressing attendees at the Annual AGM of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that personnel within the ECG's IT department allegedly introduced ransomware into the system, leading to disruptive system failures and hindering progress in the digitalization initiative.

Dr. Bawumia expressed frustration over what he termed as a deliberate hindrance, emphasizing that the ransomware attack was orchestrated with the intention of extorting money from the government. The perpetrators reportedly demanded payment to restore system functionality, a demand Dr. Bawumia condemned as unacceptable.

Following the intervention of national security agencies, the culprits behind the sabotage were identified, arrested, and the system was subsequently restored. Dr. Bawumia highlighted that as a result of the digitalization efforts, cash payments for electricity in Ghana were phased out, replaced by mobile money and electronic bank transfers.

The Vice President underscored the success of the digitalization initiative, noting a significant increase in revenue collections from over GHC450 million to exceeding a billion cedis monthly. This achievement, according to Dr. Bawumia, demonstrates the positive impact of digitalization on revenue efficiency and transparency within Ghana's electricity sector.

Dr. Bawumia's revelations shed light on the challenges faced in implementing digitalization initiatives within government institutions and underscore the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard against malicious activities aimed at undermining such efforts.
