National Theatre to Honour Professor Martin Owusu with 'The Legend of Aku Sika'
The National Theatre will honour Professor Martin Owusu with the play 'The Legend of Aku Sika' on June 1, 2, 8, and 9, 2024, at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm each day.
The National Theatre is set to honour Professor Martin Owusu with the play, ‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ on Saturday, June 1, 2, 8, and 9, 2024 at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm each day.
Professor Martin Owusu is an acclaimed scriptwriter and a long-time lecturer at the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Ghana, credited for his significant contributions to the development of Ghana’s arts and culture.
The tribute will be conducted by the National Theatre, represented by its three resident groups: the National Dance Company, the National Drama Company, and the National Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with Image Bureau and April Communications.
‘The Legend of Aku Sika,’ written by Professor Martin Owusu, who is also a renowned playwright, actor, and director, is the centerpiece of the event.

Actress and media personality, Naa Ashorkor, who is also the CEO of April Communications, will make her debut as a production director, assisted by George Quaye, CEO of Image Bureau.
‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ earned Professor Martin Owusu an ECRAG award in the late 90s. The stage play, adapted from the old folktale ‘Aku Sika,’ tells the story of a young, married orphaned woman, Aku, who suffers from a hand deformity caused by an accidental trap during her childhood. Despite this, Aku, who has grown into a brilliant and extraordinarily beautiful young lady, manages to conceal her deformity to avoid discrimination in her community.
