NDC Candidate Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor Uncertain About Detention Reasons
The Awutu Senya East NDC Parliamentary candidate, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, remains in the dark about the reasons behind her recent detention, despite police claims linking it to firearms transfer issues.
Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, has expressed confusion over the reasons behind her detention last Friday. Her arrest, which took place on June 7 at the Cantonments Police Station, has led to significant unrest among NDC supporters who protested for her release.
The police have stated that Okunor was cautioned for the offense of transferring firearms without proper authority. They mentioned that the case docket has been sent to the Attorney General for further review.
However, in a recent interview, Naa Koryoo revealed that she has not been informed of any specific reason for her arrest. She highlighted a clerical error involving her name as the only issue mentioned to her.
“I was invited to the CID headquarters on Friday around 9 am and when I got there my statement was taken together with my security guard and my driver. We sat there, no one was saying anything to us until 6 pm when we were whisked into the car and straight to the Cantonment Police Station. They put us behind bars."
“No reason. As of now, I am still yet to know the reason for the arrest. But later in the day, I heard that there were some discrepancies in the spelling of my name. I heard there was an omission of one letter from the policeman who issued a renewal receipt for the license of my gun,” she explained during an interview with Citi FM, a radio station based in Accra.
She added, “But on all the documents that I have, my name is correct. So now I am being blamed for the fault of a police officer who mistakenly did not spell my name correctly.”
The situation continues to develop as supporters await further information and the Attorney General's advice on the matter.
