The incident involving the destruction of the 200kVA transformer in Nkumkrom, Nsawam Adoagyiri municipality, has plunged the entire community into darkness. The transformer, valued at approximately GH¢ 80,000.00, was pushed down from its pole mount, prompting the acting General Manager of the Accra West Region, Emmanuel Ankrah, to express concern over such actions. Ankrah urged communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around ECG installations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In response to such vandalism, the ECG has been committed to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for damaging its infrastructure. Previously, the company successfully prosecuted individuals caught tampering with its equipment. For example, two individuals, Sitsofe Agbodza and Deladem Kodzo Tsrakasu, were sentenced to five years imprisonment each for stealing a power transformer in Adaklu-Tsrefe, Volta Region. Another individual, Atta Kakra, received a four-year prison term for stealing and installing prepaid meters belonging to the ECG in the Central Region.
These incidents highlight the ECG's efforts to protect its assets and ensure the uninterrupted provision of electricity to communities while deterring criminal activities targeting its infrastructure.
